What to do when your Xbox 360 gives you the red ring of death.
The Red Ring of Death or RROD is a specific error code related to internal system errors with the Xbox360. It is called the Red Ring of Death because seeing it may mean that your console will be unplayable without repairs from an authorized Xbox360 service center. Although there are other error codes, generally speaking they are not as problematic as the Red Ring of Death. There are things you can do to test and see if you need to send you console back or if you can fix it yourself at home.
First, what exactly is a Red Ring of Death? The Red Ring of Death is reported as a general hardware failure and will be indicated on the Xbox 360 by having three of the four lights around the power button illuminated red. Normally at least one of these lights will be green or more depending on how many controllers or devices are currently on. If you have all four lights lit red, this is not a general hardware failure or Red Ring of Death, but is actually an error reporting that the AV cable has become disconnected. This error may also occur if you experience a power surge or other electrical issues.
Now that you are certain you have a Red Ring of Death, you need to figure out what to do. First you should see if your console is still under warranty. You can call Microsoft and they will be able to tell you what your warranty status is, you may also check online via the Xbox website under support. A good indicator is the manufacture date of your Xbox360, Microsoft extended the warranty dates three years, so if the current date is three years pass the manufacture date of your console you will have to pay for repairs.
