Unwinding With Games

There are a lot of ways that different people like to unwind after each day earning their paychecks. Some head straight to a room, preferably with a bit of dim lighting, to play a few hours of Acheron’s Call online with pals dotted across the country. This game can be played for hours and hours, and, unlike a traditional competitive game, seems to ultimately never have a ‘winner.’ So, it’s easy to engage in, and enjoy, whilst becoming ever more competitive but never quite the top dog, or most skilled player.

Interactive video games are sometimes like that – they are entertaining but seem to disregard common notions of victory. Points may be earned and extra lives gained, but towards what end? Generally, these things go towards extending one’s time play! So a lot of interactive, online video games are great time drains.

More traditional games, for example, ones in which players sit around poker tables, betting, folding, raising, and bluffing, seem to build a better social scene than the instant message style of communication that accompanies the (fake) blood splattered scenes that accompany many video games. In a room in which a hand of poker is being played, one can feel the tension level rise with each round of wage increases. The dialogue may not be thick with witty repartee while everything is on the line, but much is said with each ‘tell’ or nervous tic by different players.

When it’s not down to the next card dealt making or breaking the game, the environment around poker tables is usually cordial and friendly. While this may mask the ultimate in learning the opponent’s behaviors, it is generally a pleasant social interaction. This is true especially when one’s paycheck isn’t on the line, but rather, a few dollars has been declared as the maximum bet. This helps to keep the game social rather than wildly competitive.

Video Games: Then and Now

When video games first hit the market both in the arcade and the home version of Atari a silent revolution was taking place. Many adults dismissed the games as trivial and just a source of diversion for their children but as those children grew up they turned the video gaming industry into a 20 billion dollar worldwide industry.  But even as the video gaming industry has shifted many of the new games would be unrecognizable to the children who started playing in the eighties.

When video games first started there was one objective – get the highest score.  This was because the first generation was in arcades where the principle point was to get the best score. This was true of games from pong to Pac-man to space invaders. But then in 1980 a game called Space Panic is credit with the first platform format. Soon followed by Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. games started to be linear with stories, plots and goals set in place for the user to accomplish before moving on to the next level or winning the game. Developed by Shigeru Miyamoto in 1983 Mario Bros was the first game to allow simultaneous two-player cooperative play and laid the groundwork for future multi-player games.

Most video games today have no linear perspective. They may have an end goal but due to increased graphics and memory ability they move in a 360 frame of reference and at times there is no particular end point or goal. Some people may ask themselves what happened to rescuing Princess Toadstool or Zelda? Was that not enough?  Today’s games have levels with sub levels which have other sub-levels in a never ending maze of graphics. To some this means a good return on your investment. It means there are countless options and days if not weeks or months of opportunities to play this game without getting repetitive.  But some of us still miss Mario.

Playing Video Games

About 20 years back, there used to be a kind of portable video game console popular with children. These usually cost only a few dollars, and had one or more simple games you could spend time with.

The gaming industry has metamorphosed into a billion dollar industry now. Every day there are scores of new games added to the list of available video games. There are whole industries fashioned out the manufacturing of gaming components, like joysticks, consoles, gamers and the like. There are also famous game series that add new stories and new games to their selections. All in all, its a big, booming world, and the simple game enthusiast of old can feel a little lost.

There are also games where you can actually win a good deal of money. Most of these are available in online casinos, such as bingo gaming sites. These sites offer the user an experience of a full blown real world casino, at a fraction of the cost of visiting a casino. Here you can play almost every game that is offered in a casino, including poker, bingo, roulette and the rest of them. The jackpots, too, are pretty significant.

If you are a long time dedicated gamer, and seem a little lost in this melee of games, you will need to learn to pick and choose. If you like intellectual games, you may want to stick to the old, trusted game of chess. There are also a bunch of new games that offer intellectual stimulus. However, most new video games are intended to dazzle rather than to stimulate. The awesome 3D animation, the graphics, the sound and the complexity of the games are simply astounding. So, choose one or more games that you like among all these, and stick to it. That is because it is simply impossible to try out all games out there.

Two of the Best Selling Games in History: Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt

Nintendo GameCube console & controller
Image via Wikipedia

At time point in time many of us have grown up with video games and if you didn’t they you surely saw your children or grandchildren grow up with them. Video games is one of the first things that defined the last two generations especially Nintendo.  Was there a person in America that did not know who Mario was? I doubt it. Unless they didn’t have any control with the outside world.

Nintendo revolutionize the video game market when they came out with their Nintendo 64 gaming system in 1985.  The system typically came with one game cartridge that included two games. These two games become two of the most well-known and best-selling games in history.  I am talking of course about Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt.
The undisputed king of video games is Mario. When super Mario bros. hit the market as part of the original Nintendo game system it was revolutionary.   Today with over 40 million copies sold it held on to the record for the best-selling game in history for over 20 years just recently being beaten by Wii Sport, another Nintendo creation.  At the time the graphics were state of the art and nothing compared to the many levels and the hours of different entertainment the game offered.

While Duck hunt is on the top five list many people felt it was a subpar game. On the other hand it was the first shooting game to take hold of America.  Its basic premise of shooting at ducks as they flew by became addictive and many people lost countless hours trying to improve their accuracy.  However, even with the ineffective gun which could tax anyone’s patience’s with unreliability, the worst part was without a doubt the dog who would laugh at your inability to shoot effectively. I guarantee there were countless kids who tried to shoot the dog numerous times, myself included.

Role-Playing Games: The Hardcore Experience

There are many genres of video games, each providing a different style of play and a different experience, each appealing to a different kind of gamer. Some people who play video games enjoy multiple genres; some prefer only one or two. Some, such as the action and arcade genres, have mass-appeal, while others are more niche. And with today’s technology, games are as realistic as watching movies with the xvid codec software which makes them even more popular.

One genre that is most definitely a niche of sorts is the role-playing game, or “RPG” for short. It’s niche not because it offers a lesser (or necessarily greater) experience than the other types but rather because of the time and effort involved. Many of the most popular games today offer a relatively short experience – on average perhaps six to eight hours of play. Certainly this is longer than a movie, which is good because the game costs more to buy, but still a manageable time investment. A game that lasts twenty hours would be considered a long-haul (more bang for the buck in many gamers’ eyes).

For an RPG, twenty hours would be short. It is not uncommon for this type of game to offer as many as forty hours of game play, and that is for the average player who does not attempt to see and do everything. For the truly devoted player who wishes to enjoy everything the game has to offer, the experience may last some sixty hours and perhaps even as many as a hundred – or more!

Obviously such a game requires a huge investment, and not just time. Story is of paramount importance in the genre, and because the game has such a huge time-frame in which to work, the game can craft a truly compelling world, characters and plot in which the player may get lost. As such, the emotional payoff can be much greater than if one simply played through a six-hour experience. Hence the genre’s devoted following.

The Future of Video Games

Virtual reality uses multimedia content. Appli...

Video games are ever evolving. When you look at games just from 2 years ago you’ll notice that they are visibly inferior to the video games of today. The same thing will be said 2 years from now and 5 years from now. But when you look at the leaps and bounds that video game technology has made in the last 25 years you start to wonder at the possibilities that will come to fruition by that point in time.  Will we all be play in a virtual reality that will let you taste, touch, smell or see something in a realistic lifelike setting that aren’t even there.  You may remember the short movies that were shown about what the future will be like or Disneyland’s tomorrow land and  how they seems so different from what the world really turned out like. Well in that vein we are trying to ponder what the future holds for video gaming and what hopefully will become reality or let’s say virtual reality in the not too distant future.

For many of us we believe that video games are going in one direction and that is motion control.  Pioneered by Nintendo’s Wii system motion controlled games have been around now for 4 years and now with the release of Xbox Kinect, which does not need any controllers, another stride has been taken towards full interactivity.

Another facet of video games that will differ is that games themselves will become smarter. Games will adapt their presentation dependent on who the player is. For example it will be able to differentiate between the 15 year old who plays every day and the 8 years old who just started.

Other enhancements we see is that you can start playing a game at home and be able to take it with you onto public transport via your phone or other handheld device. This in a sense would create a differentiated reality where you simultaneously exist in the game as well in the real world.
