The main contributions to teen violence are the individual teen’s home life and their mental stability, not video games.

While many video games are made for children, this is not the main market that video game companies think of when marketing their products. Most of the video game players are adults who grew up playing games and continue to do so into their adult years. More than 60 percent of the market for game consoles is over the age of 18. One of the main benefits that adults achieve as a result of playing video games is an increase in cognitive abilities. In fact, some studies have shown that adults who play video games perform about 20 percent better in cognitive activities than those adults who do not play video games regularly.

Problem-Solving Skills
Many people complain about how video games are a waste of time, but then they will sit and watch TV for hours on end. Video games are more of an active experience than watching TV and it actually involves problem-solving skills. By playing video games, gamers build up their skills and keep their minds active whereas watching TV is a passive activity that does not help develop the mind.

Hand and Eye Coordination
Adults who play video games often have better hand and eye coordination than people who only play occasionally. In fact, a study of more than 300 surgeons showed that the ones who played video games that required spatial skills were significantly quicker when performing drills that tested these skills.

Distraction from Overeating
One of the things that adults benefit from when they play video games is that they are distracted from overeating. In one study of 2700 gamers conducted by Real Games, nearly 60 percent of the subjects snacked less than they did when they weren’t playing video games. More than 40 percent of smokers studied also said they smoked less often when they were involved in playing video games regularly.

Does Pirating Video Games Actually Help the Industry?

The debate over pirating material has been a fierce one in the last decade and it continues to be a hot-button issue today. These days, much of the controversy is focused on pirating video games. One of the latest victims is Sony PlayStation, but it may not be as bad as it seems.

A new video game scheduled to hit the market – “Elemental: War of Magic”- has reignited video game piracy debate because it promises to allow users to copy the game without worrying about digital rights or any other protections that typically stop this from happening. In addition, many video game companies are not happy that used game sales are also hurting their bottom line because the companies do not get any royalties or any other financial kickbacks from the used games that independent stores sell. While this isn’t piracy per se, many people in the industry are drawing parallels between the two ideas.

This frustration isn’t new. During the 1980s, video game companies were trying to find ways to prevent gamers from exchanging discs with video games which cut down on the profits made by the companies. Video game piracy has come a long way into what it is today and the companies have yet to find a viable and effective way of curbing the activity from happening. Today, gamers have online bulletin boards and servers where others can download and share their favorite games. This makes it almost unnecessary to go to the store and buy your own copy.

As a real world example, the video game “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2″ sold nearly 12 million copies in 2009. It was the year’s best-selling video game. However, more than 4 million copies of this game were downloaded illegally through one of the pirating methods available.

So far, the most effective method for curbing the activity is huge penalties and fines for gamers who get caught uploading games online. Some companies are making their products more affordable and readily available as a solution to the problem. It may be awhile to determine which method works best.

Have you ever looked at the ratings on a video game and wondered what they meant? Usually, the ratings simply consist of a couple letters with little or no explanation. So how do you know if you are getting an age-appropriate video game? Here is a quick guide to the ratings on video games and a short description of what each one means.

EC – This is an abbreviation for “Early Childhood.” This means that the game is ideal for children who are at least three years old. If you see this rating, you should expect the game to appropriate materially for your toddler.

This one-letter abbreviation stands for “Everyone.” This means that the content in the video game is appropriate for anyone over the age of six. There may be some violence and mischief committed by the characters, but it is overall mild and safe.

T – If you see a “T” as the rating on a game, it is appropriate for ages 13 and up. The game probably contains some violence, strong language and suggestive themes, but it is kept relatively mild compared to the next rating.

M – You’ve probably seen this rating on many video games lately. That’s because it stands for “Mature” and more and more video games are being geared toward adults. Games with these ratings often include intense violence, sexual scenes, foul language and more. It would be like going to an R-rated movie in many cases except for the fact that you don’ get to play along during the movie.

AO – This rating stands for “Adults Only” and it would be equivalent to the NC-17 rating for movies. Games in this category tend to be very graphic in their sex scenes, depictions of gratuitous violence and language. These games are not intended for any gamers under the age of 18.

RP – The “RP” rating means that the rating is still pending. If you are unsure of its content, you should wait until it has been rated before letting your children play it.

With video games’ popularity exploding, it certainly feels like the golden age of gaming has arrived. And with the ubiquity of the internet, indie developers can reach wide audiences. The quality of games is at its highest point in history, and with billions of dollars being spent on video games each year, the industry undoubtedly has a bright future. So, what was the industry like in its infancy? Let’s take a look at some classic games that don’t deserve to be forgotten.

Trinity – A Nuclear Text-Adventure

It may be difficult to imagine today, but some of the best-selling “video” games in the 1980s had no graphics at all. These “text-adventures” were played by typing commands into a parser and then reading the results. Sounds boring, but these kind of games stimulated players’ imaginations and tested their logic. Trinity, written by Brian Moriarty, is widely regarded as one the best of these text adventures. The game begins in London in Kensington Gardens, but the setting quickly turns to a Alice-in-Wonderland-like dreamscape ruled by a gnomon’s shadow and populated by surreal characters and happenings. The plot revolves around nuclear testing and nuclear war – topical topics during the mid-1980s, when Trinity was published.

Trinity’s Impact

Though it would be criminal to reveal the solutions to the game’s puzzles, Trinity did involve using a lot of logic and in some cases, a little bit of intuition. One puzzle involves figuring out how to get across magical grass that repels all efforts to walk on it, and another forces the player to figure out how to survive in outer space long enough to complete a specific task. But what many took away from the game was its overt disarmament message; Trinity did not try to hide the devastating effects of a nuclear war. Perhaps that message is what has helped the game maintain a following today. In any case, Trinity features sharp writing, imaginative puzzles, and unforgettable locations.
